Japanese Pork meatballs are deep fried meatballs coated in flavoursome sauce. By just changing the sauce, you will get quite different meatball dishes – one with sweet and sour sauces, one with weet soy sauce like teriyaki sauce. Both are really tasty.

Kakiage is a type of tempura made with a variety of vegetable strips, often with seafood. This is a popular home cooking dish as it uses leftover vegetables to clean up the fridge for the week.

The Japanese version of steamed dumpling, shumai (or shao mai) is quite easy to make. It only contains pork mince, onion and few typical Japanese seasonings, but it tastes so good.

Pork Shogayaki (Ginger Pork) is a thinly sliced sautéed pork with tasty sauce with ginger flavour. It's a very popular lunch menu in Japan.

One of my favourite hot pots, yosenabe (寄せ鍋) is packed with seafood, chicken and vegetables. Unlike shabushabu, you don’t need dipping sauces because yosenabe is cooked in flavoured soup. You can cook it all on the stove and serve, or let people cook piece by piece at the table for entertainment.

A super easy Japanese stir fry from Okinawa, goya chanpuru is full of bonito flakes, which is unique for a stir fry dish and so flavoursome that you will get addicted to it. It is not greasy at all and my version is made with pork slices instead of SPAM which is the real version of goya chanpuru.

Chicken Macaroni Gratin - A classic Japanese comfort food, this is a creamy pasta bake made with macaroni, chicken, mushrooms and a creamy béchamel sauce. www.japan.recipetineats.com

You will be surprised to learn that the texture of potatoes when quickly stir fried is so unique and different from the cooked potatoes you know. Pork and potato stir fry turns the potatoes into something totally different from the usual dishes like baked potatoes, potato salads and mashed potatoes. And it is so quick to make and yummy.

Home-made temakizushi (手巻き寿司) looks fancy but is very easy to prepare Cut the sushi fillings, display everything on the table and let the crowd serve themselves. It is fun and great for a little party with family and friends.

Shime saba is a cured mackerel fillet that is great for sashimi as well as sushi topping. It is very simple to make and so tasty. All you need is mackerel, salt and rice wine vinegar. If you can get a very fresh mackerel, you must try this. No cooking, just marinating!
