Japanese kids’ favourite dish, omurice (Japanese Rice Omelette) is another Western-influenced Japanese dish. It is basically an omelette with ketchup-flavoured chicken fried rice inside it.

You can enjoy the distinct flavour of bamboo shoots in this dish, Rice with Bamboo Shoots (Takenoko Gohan). To preserve the delicate flavour of the bamboo shoots, I simply cook them with rice in a lightly flavoured dashi stock.

This is a quick Japanese fried rice made with store-bought fried rice seasoning. All you need is rice, egg and chopped vegetables. If you want, add meat too. The flavour of the Japanese fried rice is similar to Chinese fried rice but a bit lighter and less oily.

Somen (or sōmen) is a very thin noodles served cold which makes it a perfect summer dish. Noodles are served in chilled water and the dipping sauce is also chilled.

Sushi rolls are becoming a popular healthy take-away food in Australia. Most of them are made as large thick rolls, but the sushi rolls made at traditional sushi restaurants are thin, tiny rolls just perfect for finger food.

Yakisoba (焼きそば) is the Japanese version of stir fry noodles. Noodles are cooked with sliced pork and plenty of vegetables - cabbage, bean sprouts, carrots, onion and shallots / scallion, then coated with special sauce. Yum!

The Japanese version of steamed dumpling, shumai (or shao mai) is quite easy to make. It only contains pork mince, onion and few typical Japanese seasonings, but it tastes so good.

Yakitori is a Japanese skewered chicken, cooked on a griller with either sweet soy sauce or just salt. You don't marinate chicken! Great for entertaining a big crowd as it is a kind of finger food. It is so tasty and easy to eat that you would not realise you ate so many skewers of chicken!
